概要
From their early beginnings, The Police were hailed as a maverick live band. Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers played with the improvisational instincts of jazz and the raw energy of punk rock – a blend that made them a definitive rock group of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Their debut album Outlandos D’Amour soared up the charts in 1978, with such hits as ‘Roxanne’ and ‘So Lonely’. The next year, their sophomore record Reggatta de Blanc also topped the charts and brought us the hits ‘Message in a Bottle’ and ‘Walking on the Moon’. Zenyatta Mondatta soon followed in 1980, with Top Ten hits ‘Don't Stand So Close To Me’ and ‘De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.' 1981’s Ghost in the Machine went double platinum, containing hit singles ‘Every Little Thing She Does is Magic’ and ‘Spirits in the Material World’. The band’s swansong Synchronicity proved to be their most successful album yet; it produced ‘Every Breath You Take’, one of the most remembered ’80s rock ballads. Parting ways in 1984, the individual artists’ careers continued to flourish. The Police were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, and with 2 BRIT Awards and 6 Grammy wins, The Police earned phenomenal chart success and a plethora of accolades both public and critical, but they never allowed such peripherals to overshadow their commitment to the music itself.
